UG-GMES launches a continental competition: Incubation Challenge 2021

The GMES and Africa Incubation Challenge 2021 competition targets teams or individuals with a keen interest in building sustainable environmental solutions using Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT) and Big Data that could impact the marine and coastal spaces. The Challenge is directed at developing a positive innovation culture in the maritime and coastal domain as well as building partnerships with innovative startups and individual enthusiasts.

The competition is the latest innovative initiative of the continental programme "GMES and Africa" co-funded by the African Union Commission and the European Commission and led by the University of Ghana's consortium based in West Africa. It is also the 4th competition organised by the University of Ghana and its partners since 2019. The Challenge is open to citizens of any African country or anyone residing in any African country.

Applying teams or individuals are invited to focus their solutions on domains such as Big data in Ocean Observation, Biodiversity and Conservation, Insitu Environmental Measurements, Marine Pollution Monitoring, Aquaculture Development, Fisheries Management and Small Vessel Monitoring, Safe Inland Water Transport and Navigation, Safety at Sea. Applicants can also propose innovative solutions that are not captured above but are equally relevant to marine and coastal areas in Africa. 


The challenge which runs from 9th August 2021 till 5th November 2021 is in four main phases. These include which include: an application and selection period; a virtual training stage, a Bootcamp stage (in-person) to be held in Ghana; and an awards ceremony. The winning teams will earn among others cash prizes of $ 5000, $ 4000 and $ 3000 for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd places respectively. Additionally, products developed by the winning team will be showcased at the continental level under the auspices of the African Union Commission.

Partners directly responsible for the successful implementation of the GMES and Africa Innovation Challenge are the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security & Africa, University of Ghana (UG-GMES), CLOUDPORT, Regional Marine Centre, WAZIUP and HUBiquitous.
