Fishermen appeal to GMES & Africa to make Sustainable the Ocean State Weather Forecast

President of Canoes and Fishing Gears Association of Ghana (CaFGOAG), Nana Kweigyah, called on the GMES and Africa Community not to abandon them and to continue providing the ocean state forecast services. According to him, the ocean state service has made a tremendous impact on the lives of artisanal fishermen in Ghana. He made the appeal at the Launch of the Marine and Coastal Areas Management in North and West Africa (MarCNoWA) Project, under the GMES and Africa Project Phase 2.

More than 75 African experts in natural resources, marine and coastal areas management gathered in Accra-Ghana to launch the MarCNoWA Project on the 6th of July 2022 in Accra, Ghana. The launch brought experts from the GMES & Africa consortia of institutions, the African Union Commission, the regional bodies involved in fisheries and environmental management, and Earth Observation practitioners from the private sector, the partner institutions the national focal points of beneficiary institutions.

In his address, Nana Kweigyah reminded the gathering about the challenges faced by the artisanal fisheries such as the decline in fish catch due to Illegal Unregulated and Unreported (IUU) fishing; damage to canoes and gear, loss of lives at Sea and displacement; all due to climate change and lack of information. He expressed his gratitude on behalf of all artisanal fishermen and shared how the state of the sea information is used to make decisions on fishing or not.

He informed the gathering that they have two main means of receiving the ocean state forecast messages, either by dialling the USSD code *920*88# or reading the marine forecast bulletin disseminated by Ghana Meteorological Agency. The leadership of the fishermen further disseminate the information by producing audios of the marine forecast in local languages such as Fante, Ga and Ewe that are disseminated via local radios or social media platforms.
