Youth urged to use Talents to promote Science & protect the Environment, Prof. Daniel K. Asiedu

Young people in Ghana and Africa have been advised to use their talents to help promote science while protecting the environment.

This was made known by the Provost of the University of Ghana’s College of Applied and Basic Science (CBAS), Prof. Daniel K. Asiedu at a short ceremony to present a package to Rita Adwoa Arthur, a young Ghanaian writer, who won both anglophone digital art contests organized to commemorate the World Environment Day and World Oceans Day. She received an iPad, a cheque and souvenirs from the organisers.

The Director of the GMES & Africa project, the Provost, encouraged other winners and all contestants to continue working hard and aspire to make a difference in society, especially through innovative ways that help in the protection of the Environment.

Also present at the presentation ceremony was the Project Manager and staff of the Regional Marine Centre.

Rita produced an animation of an acrostic poem (https://bit.ly/UgGmesEnvironment) and a short film (https://bit.ly/UGGmesISeeTheSEA) to win the World Environment Day 2020 and World Oceans Day 2020 respectively. She competed with about 20 other contestants from Ghana, Cape Verde and Nigeria to win the Anglophone version of the competition. Her entries denounced the pollution that the environment is subjected to and the clarion call to protect it.

According to Rita, “taking part in both the Environment Day and World Oceans Day competitions presented an opportunity to draw awareness on some issues close to home (Ghana), and close to my heart as well. Winning, as they say, was the icing on the cake.”

Rita Arthur, after receiving her winning package, was grateful and expressed her excitement. “Thank you to the organisers, thank my awesome team, and the biggest thanks go to everyone doing their part to protect and preserve the environment and oceans; no matter how great or small that maybe,” she noted.

The digital contests were organized by the Regional Marine Centre at the University of Ghana under the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security & Africa (GMES &Africa) to raise awareness on the values of the Environment and Oceans.

GMES and Africa is an Earth Observation programme of the African Union jointly established with the European Union, and designed to strengthen capacities in Africa for the optimal exploitation and utilisation of Earth Observation systems, data and technologies towards the continent’s sustainable development.
