UG-GMES and EUMETSAT Joint Online Training: Protecting Fishing Grounds using Earth Observation Data

The University of Ghana in collaboration with EUMETSAT announces that applications are open for the 3rd GMES & Africa and Copernicus Marine Earth Observation Training Course.

The online training forms part of the activities of the GMES and Africa Project aimed at promoting the use of EO technology for the protection of sensitive marine and coastal resources and ecosystems in the West African sub-region for increased socioeconomic benefits and sustainable development.

This course is open to applicants from any African country who wants to develop skills in the processing, analyses and interpretation of Earth Observation data for fisheries management and ocean space monitoring. The course is designed to target early-career scientists, fisheries managers, personnel involved in maritime security and fisheries surveillance as well as students with interest in remote sensing.

This capacity-building workshop will provide an opportunity for participants to learn marine remote sensing principles, get acquainted with open source data processing tools available for EO data analyses and some applications for fisheries conservation.

The course will be carried out online in two phases. The first phase which will be a self-taught phase will span for 3-weeks beginning Monday 19 October 2020 to Friday 6 November 2020.

The second phase will provide an opportunity for participants from the first phase to carry out hands-on exercises. This phase, which will last for 5 days from Monday 9 November 2020 to Saturday 14 November 2020 will focus on topics such as:
  • Techniques for accessing satellite acquired ocean data
  • Time series analysis of key ocean surface variables
  • Upwelling dynamics
  • Mapping fishing grounds
  • Illegal fishing monitoring using vessel traffic data and radar imageries
In addition, participants will carry out mini-projects on areas of their choice but in line with the overall objective of the training workshop. Selected applicants will be required to have good internet access and familiar with Python programming, ESA SNAP, Bilko and QGIS to effectively participate in the hands-on phase of the course.

Daily schedules for the training will commence 0900GMT to 1630GMT each day for the second phase. The working language for the training will be in English.
